MARRIAGE RENEWAL

Welcome

A very warm and heart-felt welcome to you all.

We are gathered together to share in the

Renewal of Marriage Vows by (N) and (N),

and to acknowledge and celebrate

that continuing relationship.

My name is (NN).

I am (relationship/personal details follow) of (N) an (N).

They have asked me to say on their behalf they are

both pleased and honoured we are all here

to witness this important occasion.

And to stand alongside them during this event

in acknowledgment of their decision (nn) years ago

to commit to journeying through life together.

Loving relationships are acknowledged not just on one day,

at one event, but are a cumulative and ongoing shared expression

of care, respect, trust and hope.

So we gather and we celebrate, knowing that

by our shared presence with them,

we are saying they, together,

are loved by many others.

We also gather to surround them with

our thoughts,

our prayers, and

our continuing best wishes.

Symbolic action

(nn) years ago (N) and (N)

joined their lives together in marriage and in doing so

they combined their two separate lives

into a new and living reality.

Today, on this table, there are some life symbols

which honour their individuality and their union as one.

There is an old saying that it takes a village to raise a child.

That can also be said of a marriage…

individuals in relationship with friends and community.

(i) Making of Sand Mantra

(ii) Lighting Three Candles

(iii) Weaving Coloured Threads

Today we will symbolise that personal and wider relationship.

Each of you is invited to come to the table,

(instructions follow).

A community of friends in relationship.

Statement of Intent

And so I ask you both…

(N) do you wish to renew your Marriage Vows?

I do.

(N) do you wish to renew your Marriage Vows?

I do.

Renewal of Vows

(N) and (N), (nn) years ago

you celebrated your relationship publicly

through the taking of Marriage Vows.

Today, in this place, and before these friends

do you (N), reaffirm your commitment to (N)

to be her husband:

(copy of appropriate/past vow to follow)

to have and to hold

from this day forward,

for better, for worse,

for richer, for poorer,

in sickness and in health,

to love and to cherish,

as long as you both shall live.

I do.

Today, in this place, and before these friends

do you (N), reaffirm your commitment to (N)

to be his wife:

(copy of appropriate/past vow to follow)

to have and to hold

from this day forward,

for better, for worse,

for richer, for poorer,

in sickness and in health,

to love and to cherish,

as long as you both shall live.

I do.

Exchange of Rings

What symbol did you give each other in this Marriage?

Rings.

Who holds those rings today?

(Response)

The rings are presented to the celebrant

Your rings are circles and a circle is the symbol of

the sun, the earth, the universe, of wholeness, peace and unity.

Like circles, your rings have no beginning and no end

and in the sacred tradition of marriage,

rings have come to symbolise

love and the endless union of body, of mind and of spirit.

These rings also show to the world

your love and commitment to one another.

May the presence of these rings always remind you

of the love you have pledged and the life you willingly share

with one another.

Let us take a moment to send our prayers, our thoughts, and our love

to these rings, so that as (N) and (N) give and receive them again,

they will carry our love with them, as well.

Silent prayer

These rings, now blessed, are a symbol of love and faithfulness.

They seal the vows of marriage and represent

a promise of forever love.

I, (N), give you (N), this ring as a token of my

continuing love and commitment to you.

As a ring has no end, neither shall my love for you.

I, (N), give you (N), this ring as a token of my

continuing love and commitment to you.

As a ring has no end, neither shall my love for you.

The Blessing

May God the starmaker cradle and circle you.

May God the storyteller beckon and encourage you.

May God the life changer challenge you and cherish you.

May you walk in the light of God’s love and laughter

all the moments of your nights and days.

All Amen.

Greetings extended to (N) and (N) by Family and Friends
