LITURGY FOR THE CELEBRATION OF LIFE
25 June 2017. Pentecost 3A.  (Green).


Acknowledgement of Country/First Peoples
(An act towards reconciliation)

For thousands of years Indigenous people have walked
in this land, on their own country.
Their relationship with the land is at the centre of their lives.

We acknowledge the (NN) People and their stewardship
of this land throughout the ages.

(NN) is a safe place for all people to worship regardless of
race, creed, age, cultural background or sexual orientation


GATHERING

Refreshment Station/Water Basins
Pottery basins are set on stands near the entrance to the sanctuary. 
Attendees are invited to dip their hands in the cool water in the basins as they arrive. 
Or to rinse each other’s hands. 
That we may relax, be refreshed, and prepare for this time together.

(Note: A small sign is placed above the basin explaining that as they dip their hands in the water, they are invited to relax and try to mindfully set aside or release for a time anything that might be preventing them from being fully present—each traveler rinsing the “dust from the road”).

OR

(A suggestion of other words)
We come together from our separate lives,
each of us bringing our concerns, our preoccupations,
our hopes, and our dreams.

We are not yet fully present.
The traffic, the last-minute cooking, the final details still cling to us.
        Our bodies hold the rush of the past few hours.

It is now time to let go of these pressures
and really arrive…   

When you are ready, repeat silently to yourself: ‘Hineini’ or ‘Here I am’.
Hineini is used in the Torah to signify being present
in body, mind, and spirit.
        It means settling into where we are and simply being “here”. (Adapted/Nan Fink Gene)

we travel as a people, on a winding road.
v2  We share our lives, our experiences, our hopes, our fears.

v1 So as we gather, let us celebrate the richness and diversity of life.

The Community Candle is lit

We light this flame and give praise for
the gifts that lift and inspire our living:
music, art, creativity and all beauty.

may we also celebrate the many gifts of darkness.

Act of Awareness
The earth turning…

Exploding orb of helium and hydrogen,
firing our lives into existence.
We are here.
We mindfully take our places in life again.

Imagine… we are one, connected, human family.
Be and know that you are the ones the world awaits.

a beautiful presence.

CENTERING

Presentation of Water Basins
Words which acknowledge that the dust of many roads and many life experiences has been rinsed into the basins, and calls for the contents of the basins and the gathering to be transformed, renewed, and more fully alive

The dust of many roads and may life experiences
has been washed in this refreshing water.
For this place is a sacred place.

May we
greet one another with open hearts and minds;
inspire each other to consider new questions
and seek deeper meaning;
and cultivate both wisdom and compassion.

And may this time together empower us to take some new steps
so all our living is transforming and the
yearning of our hearts become reality.
The water basins are removed from the worship space

Centering Silence
Let there now be a silence among us…

In the stillness of early morning,
In the heat of the mid-day sun,
In the cool of the evening,

Readings from our broad Religious Tradition
Some readings from our broad religious tradition shall now be read.
The reader is (NN).

From the World of Theology:
“The Legacy of Christianity”
By Lloyd Geering. The Once and Future Jesus/131-32.

We humans the world over are becoming increasingly interdependent on one another.
Our material standard of living is becoming dependent on one global economy,
even though this is making some very rich and some very poor…

More than ever before
we humans face a common future
and for this we must create some
kind of global culture.

The global world now being formed is not a Christian world,
certainly not in the sense that medieval Christendom was a Christian world.
But neither is it non-Christian, in the way that the pre-Christian world of Greece and Rome was.

The global world as a whole has been influenced by the Christian tradition a great deal
more than is usually recognized.

The global world has to be described as post-Christian.

While there are still very many who personally embrace the traditional Christian beliefs,
Christianity no longer overtly determines
the public face of western societies.

The post-Christian global world is even better described as secular.
By the term ‘secular’ I do not mean non-religious but ‘this-worldly’…

It is only when religion is focused primarily on ‘other-worldliness’,
as has been the case in the Christian tradition,
that ‘secular’ appeared to be ‘anti-religious’.

Harvey Cox defined secularisation simply as
“man turning his attention away from worlds beyond and toward this world and this time”…

Traditional Gospel:
Matthew 10:16, 24, 34-39

Jesus continued to instruct the Twelve as follows:
'I am sending you out [into the world] like sheep into the midst of wolves;
so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves…

'A disciple is not above the teacher,
nor a slave above the master;
it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher,
and the slave like the teacher…

'Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth;
I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

'For I have come to set a man against his father,
and a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household.

'Those who prefer father or mother to me are not worthy of me.
Those who prefer son or daughter more to me are not worthy of me.
Those who do not take up the cross and follow in my footsteps are not worthy of me.

'Those who find their life will lose it,
and those who lose their life for my sake will find it’.

A Celebration of Faith (Optional)
In response to the word reflected on
let us stand and share together a celebration of our faith.
The people stand as they are able

We celebrate the presentness of God
in our lives and in our community,
All  whose creativity is not defeated by concrete or traffic.

We celebrate the presentness of Christ
who lived as friend and saviour
to the people of the city,
All  who ate and laughed, wept and celebrated
with ordinary people like us.

We celebrate the presentness of the Holy Spirit
who dances in the city as truth and moments of love,
All  who goes between us with threads of community,
and never leaves us without hope.

We celebrate the presence of the church in our lives,
All  which is real when it stands open
to the life of the city, and bears witness
to the love and justice of God.
